Any aspiring Malaysian entrepreneurs should feel lucky as our country was ranked\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.doingbusiness.org\/en\/rankings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>12th in the World Bank\u2019s Ease of Doing Business<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0report in 2020.<\/p><p>However, that does not mean no planning needs to be included, in fact, without proper guidance, it\u2019s\u00a0<strong>just as easy to get lost<\/strong>\u00a0in an unfamiliar world. So, how do you go about planning a business venture from scratch?<\/p><h2><b>Beginnings<\/b><\/h2><p>Like everywhere else, it is easy to just declare that you want to start a business in Malaysia. One of the most important things is\u00a0<strong>to figure out your intention for doing so<\/strong>, only then can you work out some of the whats, hows, and wheres.<\/p><p>Now, start asking yourself:\u00a0<em>do you have any special skills? What is your business idea? How will you fund your business? How much capital do you need? Is there a market need in Malaysia for your business idea?<\/em><\/p><p>An idea can only get you so far, you need to\u00a0<strong>pair it with a well-strategised business plan<\/strong>. The best way to start up a good business plan in Malaysia is to do thorough market research. Your budget should include all expected inflows and outflows,\u00a0<em>especially your marketing cost<\/em>. You would also leave some aside to continue living your life, and for any of your family members under your care.<\/p><h2><b>Your Preferred Business Type<\/b><\/h2><p>Local entrepreneurs can opt to set up their companies as a\u00a0<strong><em>Sole Proprietorship<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><em>Limited Liability Partnership (LLP)<\/em><\/strong>, or\u00a0<strong><em>General Partnership<\/em><\/strong>, a\u00a0<strong><em>Private Limited Company<\/em><\/strong>, or as a\u00a0<strong><em>Public Limited Company<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssm.com.my\/Pages\/Register_Business_Company_LLP\/Business\/Starting_Sole_Partnership.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Sole proprietorships<\/em><\/a>\u00a0are easy to apply for and easy to manage, but the downside is that the sole proprietor is\u00a0<strong>personally liable for all of the business\u2019s debts<\/strong>. This means that if your business is in debt, you are in debt; legally, you and your business are the same entity.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssm.com.my\/Pages\/Register_Business_Company_LLP\/Business\/Starting_Sole_Partnership.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>General partnerships<\/em><\/a>\u00a0are\u00a0<strong>similar in nature to sole proprietorship<\/strong>s but<strong>\u00a0involve two or more individuals<\/strong>\u00a0agreeing to share in all assets, profits, and financial and legal liabilities of a jointly-owned business.<\/li><li>A\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssm.com.my\/Pages\/Register_Business_Company_LLP\/Company\/Starting_Company.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">private limited company<\/a>\u00a0(Sendirian Berhad<\/em>) is its own\u00a0<strong>entity separate from its owners<\/strong>, who hold limited liabilities over the business. For example, if your business is in trouble, you are\u00a0<strong>not required by law to cover business debts with your personal assets<\/strong>. However, your control over the company has to be shared with other shareholders.<\/li><li>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssm.com.my\/Pages\/Register_Business_Company_LLP\/Company\/Starting_Company.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>public limited company<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0(Berhad)<\/em>\u00a0is a company whose<strong>\u00a0securities are traded on a stock exchange<\/strong>\u00a0and can be bought and sold by anyone. A\u00a0<em>PLC<\/em>\u00a0raises capital easily through the sale of stocks to the general public, but it is a form of company usually reserved for big corporations that the public believes will make money.<\/li><\/ul><h2><b>Name and Locate Your Baby<\/b><\/h2><p>Your business name is the\u00a0<strong>most visible part of your brand identity<\/strong>. A good name is the starting point of your marketing strategy.<\/p><p>To start and register a company name in Malaysia, first run a name check through the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssm-einfo.my\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM)<\/a>, each name submitted costs\u00a0<strong>RM 30<\/strong>.
