That\u2019s because they\u2019re a\u00a0<strong>digital or virtual currency<\/strong>\u00a0secured by\u00a0<strong>cryptography<\/strong>. Cryptography makes it almost\u00a0<strong>impossible to counterfeit<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/corporatefinanceinstitute.com\/resources\/knowledge\/other\/double-spending\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">double-spend<\/a>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>a cryptocurrency. It acts as a\u00a0<strong>distributed ledger<\/strong>\u00a0enforced by a varying network of computers that makes sure no coin is being spent more than once. This task falls to a group of people known as\u00a0<em>\u201cminers.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/p><h3><b>What are They Used For?\u00a0<\/b><\/h3><p>Cryptocurrencies make it\u00a0<strong>easier to transfer funds directly<\/strong>\u00a0between two parties as it<strong>\u00a0eliminates the need of security provided by a trusted third party<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>high processing fees<\/strong>. Not only does it make big payments much easier, some argue it is also more secured.\u00a0<\/p><p>Imagine making a\u00a0<em>cross-border transaction<\/em>, without the need of a bank, it can\u00a0<strong>go through almost instantaneously<\/strong>. Even for domestic transactions, they can be conducted outside of bank business hours. Many criminal transactions online are now conducted in cryptocurrencies, making it hard for authorities to trace.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><h3><b>Why Are (Were) They So Popular?\u00a0<\/b><\/h3><p>You\u2019ve heard the stories about\u00a0<strong>Bitcoin investments<\/strong>\u00a0and how people got rich investing in cryptocurrency. This is why\u00a0<strong>people raced to buy them<\/strong>, because they will become so\u00a0<strong>much more valuable in the future<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p><p>Some people put their investments in cryptocurrency to\u00a0<strong>protect their money and assets from inflation<\/strong>, believing it will not devalue in the same way money in the bank will.\u00a0<\/p><p>Then, there are\u00a0<strong>speculators<\/strong>\u00a0who\u00a0<strong>invested simply<\/strong>\u00a0because they were\u00a0<strong>growing in value<\/strong>, regardless of whether they believe Bitcoin will be the payment of the future!\u00a0<\/p><h3><b>Should I Invest in Cryptocurrency?\u00a0<\/b><\/h3><p>That\u2019s the question. If you asked this question 10 years ago, the answer would be\u00a0<strong>a definite yes<\/strong>. However, since its boom a few years ago, prices for cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin have been\u00a0<strong>volatile and unpredictable<\/strong>.
