In reality, it is never too early to start planning for your retirement.<\/p><p>We must remember that life doesn\u2019t always go the way we want it to, we cannot foresee what we\u2019ll be doing at age 50 or what our financial situation will be like.<\/p><p><strong>The best way to reduce the likelihood of having to work well past our intended retirement age is to start planning now!<\/strong><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><h3><b>Our Life Expectancy is Increasing<\/b><\/h3><p>Good news! We are living longer lives on average; it is now a lot more common to meet someone in their 80s than it was 50 years ago. However, that also means\u00a0<em>70% of Malaysians<\/em>\u00a0are\u00a0<em>outliving their retirement savings<\/em>.<\/p><p>Since we\u2019ll be hanging around longer, we\u2019ll need a bit more money to be able to live comfortably post-retirement.<\/p><p><strong>Starting early means we have more time to save enough for our entire lifespan.<\/strong><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><h3><b>Our Bodies Have Limits<\/b><\/h3><p>As much as we\u2019d love our bodies to be strong and capable forever, the truth is,\u00a0<strong>we will physically or mentally slow down eventually<\/strong>. We do not know when this day will come and may well be able to perform consistently into our 60s or 70s, but it\u2019s equally possible that we start declining before our planned retirement age.<\/p><p><em>We can\u2019t work forever<\/em>, and we won\u2019t have to if we take the initiative to plan for retirement early.\u00a0<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><h3><b>Medical Emergencies<\/b><\/h3><p>This is an ugly truth most people do not like thinking about, but we must acknowledge that as we age, medical problems\u00a0<em>may become more common<\/em>.<\/p><p>Insurance does not necessarily cover all kinds of ailments, which is why having a fund for health emergencies is\u00a0<strong>vital<\/strong>. Most people dream of travelling the world once they cut that retirement cake, so\u00a0<strong>don\u2019t let a lack of planning delay your life-changing journey around the globe<\/strong>.<\/p><p>Retirement shouldn\u2019t just be about not working and retreating to a quiet, unassuming life (unless that\u2019s what you want,) it should also be the time you\u00a0<em>live life to the fullest<\/em>\u00a0and experience things you weren\u2019t able to during your career, and for that to happen,\u00a0<strong>you need savings<\/strong>!<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><h3><b>Family Dependence<br \/><\/b><\/h3><p><em>Nuclear families<\/em>\u00a0are becoming more of the norm, children are leaving home more to find job opportunities or build their own families. With the rising cost of living,\u00a0<strong>it may not be fair to depend on family members for monetary support<\/strong>.<\/p><p>An efficient retirement plan not only allows you to\u00a0<em>live out your golden years in comfort,<\/em>\u00a0but also\u00a0<em>eases the burden<\/em>\u00a0on your immediate family members. In fact, with extra money, you may even chip in and contribute towards your grandchildren\u2019s education!\u00a0<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><h1><b>How Do I Effectively Plan for Retirement?\u00a0<\/b><\/h1><ul><li><b>Estimate Retirement Spending Needs\u00a0<\/b><\/li><\/ul><p><strong>\u201cHow much money would I need to live comfortably for the rest of my life after retirement?\u201d<\/strong><\/p><p>Ask yourself this question and try to find out the answer, take into account your daily necessities, make room for emergency fundings, unpaid mortgages, any expensive hobbies or experiences you hope to try out, and inflation. You may find that the expected spending amount is around the same as you spend now if not more, since you have more free time to splurge.\u00a0<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><ul><li><b>Start Early to Take Advantage of Compounding<\/b><\/li><\/ul><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1074 size-medium alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ibpo.com.my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/cash-coins-currency-finance-preview-300x223.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ibpo.com.my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/cash-coins-currency-finance-preview-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ibpo.com.my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/cash-coins-currency-finance-preview-197x146.jpg 197w, https:\/\/www.ibpo.com.my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/cash-coins-currency-finance-preview-50x37.jpg 50w, https:\/\/www.ibpo.com.my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/cash-coins-currency-finance-preview-101x75.jpg 101w, https:\/\/www.ibpo.com.my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/cash-coins-currency-finance-preview.jpg 728w\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" \/><\/p><p><em>Compounding<\/em>\u00a0is when the money you earn from investments is reinvested to try and earn even more.\u00a0<strong>The earlier you start, the more opportunities you give your investments to compound<\/strong>.<\/p><p>You don\u2019t need a\u00a0<em>huge<\/em>\u00a0amount of money to reap the benefits of compounding as the\u00a0<em>minimum investment<\/em>\u00a0is\u00a0<strong>only a few hundred ringgit<\/strong>. Over the period of a few decades you easily stand to\u00a0<em>grow your savings into the thousands<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><ul><li><b>Diversify Investments<\/b><\/li><\/ul><p>While EPF is useful, it helps a lot more if you can also draw from\u00a0<em>private retirement schemes<\/em>\u00a0and other assets.\u00a0<strong>In our 20s or 30s, we can take more calculated risks and engage in stock trading or long-term investments to build up our portfolio.<\/strong><\/p><p>As we move closer to retirement age, we can switch over to more\u00a0<em>conservative investments<\/em>\u00a0with guaranteed returns.\u00a0<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><ul><li><b>Be Mindful of Health<\/b><\/li><\/ul><p>As stated before, remember to\u00a0<strong>keep your health in mind<\/strong>\u00a0when planning your retirement funds. This is very important as\u00a0<strong>a hospital bill can easily derail all your post-retirement plans<\/strong>.<\/p><p>We\u2019re not just talking about\u00a0<em>major surgeries<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em>long-term hospitalisations<\/em>, but also\u00a0<em>increased visits to the dentist, and for hearing or visual aids<\/em>.
