Online banking means accessing banking features and services through your bank\u2019s website or app from a computer or device. All banks employ some form of digitalisation, but digital banking will be\u00a0<strong>fully automated<\/strong>, without the need for physical branches to support operations. Every single transaction will only be conducted digitally.\u00a0<\/p><p>In Malaysia, we do not yet have a fully operating digital banking institution yet, but Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) has issued the framework and outline applicants must comply with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnm.gov.my\/-\/policy-document-on-licensing-framework-for-digital-banks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Exposure Draft on Licensing Framework for Digital Banks<\/a>.<\/p><p>In brief, the framework states that applicants must adhere to the\u00a0<strong>Financial Services Act 2013<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>Islamic Financial Services Act 2013<\/strong>. More consequently for us, BNM requires all digital banks to<strong>\u00a0focus on financial inclusion<\/strong>, especially for underserved and unserved populations; this includes the\u00a0<em>B40<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME.)<\/em>\u00a0<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><h2><b>Why Digital Banking?<\/b><\/h2><p>Traditional banking, which is the main banking system we utilise today, involves a large number of personnel and branches. Digital banking completely\u00a0<strong>eliminates the need for these operational costs<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>helps more people access banking services<\/strong>. With lowered costs, digital banks can pass on savings to customers via higher interest rates or lower lending rates.\u00a0<\/p><p>As an additional benefit, people will\u00a0<strong>no longer need to travel to brick-and-mortar branches<\/strong>, this is especially attractive in light of the pandemic.\u00a0<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><h2><b>Who Operates Digital Banks Then?<\/b><\/h2><p>While digital banking would\u00a0<strong>reduce the need for traditional banking employees<\/strong>, in turn, it will require more\u00a0<strong>tech-savvy talents<\/strong>. So in truth, it doesn\u2019t remove job opportunities, it increases the demands for a different set of skills.\u00a0<\/p><p>This will diversify the skill sets in the banking sector, involving people from multidisciplinary backgrounds.
