By\u00a0<strong>cheating innocent people<\/strong>, often the elderly,\u00a0<strong>off thousands or even millions<\/strong>\u00a0from their savings. They are often\u00a0<strong>run by syndicates<\/strong>\u00a0with wide-reaching networks and unfortunately,\u00a0<strong>Macau Scams<\/strong>\u00a0are some of the\u00a0<strong>most active scam tactics in the country<\/strong>\u00a0at the moment.\u00a0<\/p><h2><b>Why \u201cMacau Scam?\u201d\u00a0<\/b><\/h2><p>As briefly mentioned in a\u00a0previous article\u00a0of our\u00a0<em><strong>\u201cIBPO Against Scammers\u201d<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0series, this scam tactic\u00a0<em>most likely<\/em>\u00a0got its name because it was\u00a0<strong>first reported in Macau<\/strong>. However, there is no definitive proof of this, but we will stick to the name for now.\u00a0<\/p><h3><b>How Does it Work?<\/b><\/h3><p>Macau Scams work through\u00a0<strong>fraudulent telephone calls<\/strong>\u00a0sometimes from as far as Hong Kong. They then\u00a0<strong>launder their ill-gotten wealth<\/strong>\u00a0via\u00a0<em>local celebrities<\/em>,\u00a0<em>front businesses<\/em>, and even\u00a0<em>loan sharks<\/em>\u00a0to guarantee returns.\u00a0<\/p><h2><b>How to Avoid Being a Victim?<\/b><\/h2><p>Remember, being a part of<em>\u00a0large syndicates<\/em>, these scammers are\u00a0<strong>trained and experts<\/strong>\u00a0at what they do, it is better to\u00a0<strong>stay vigilant<\/strong>\u00a0than to assume you\u2019d never become a victim.\u00a0<em>Better safe than sorry, right?<\/em>\u00a0<\/p><p>The<strong>\u00a0number one thing to do<\/strong>\u00a0if you ever receive a call you suspect of being a Macau Scam, is\u00a0<strong>NOT to panic and NOT to follow the exact instructions given by the caller<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p><div id=\"attachment_8222\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8222 size-jeg-800x400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ibpo.com.my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/portrait-pensive-asian-businesswoman-min-800x400.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ibpo.com.my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/portrait-pensive-asian-businesswoman-min-800x400.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.ibpo.com.my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/portrait-pensive-asian-businesswoman-min-360x180.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.ibpo.com.my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/portrait-pensive-asian-businesswoman-min-1140x570.jpg 1140w\" alt=\"Businesswoman Thinking About Her Decisions\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8222\" \/><\/p><p id=\"caption-attachment-8222\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stay Calm and Do Not Comply Without Thinking Through<\/p><\/div><p>It can be\u00a0<strong>hard to keep a calm head<\/strong>\u00a0in situations like this, but that\u2019s\u00a0<em>exactly<\/em>\u00a0what the scammers want to achieve, to\u00a0<strong>scare you into making irrational decisions<\/strong>\u00a0in an instant.<\/p><p>Try to remember, it is\u00a0<strong>unlikely that the police<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>a bank<\/strong>\u00a0would ever need you<strong>\u00a0to divulge private information<\/strong>, or\u00a0<strong>to perform any transactions without prior warning<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p><p>You can always\u00a0<strong>verify the legitimacy<\/strong>\u00a0of the claims of these callers by<strong>\u00a0contacting the relevant organisations<\/strong>\u00a0via their\u00a0<strong>official numbers<\/strong>.
